What Does the Bible Say About Finding Your Purpose in Life?

October 2, 2026/in Christian Woman Entrepreneur, Entrepreneur Community, Entrepreneur Ministry/by NACWE Admin

You can only organize the pantry so many times before the question hits you:

“Is this it?”

You’ve followed the rules, checked the boxes, done the devotionals, volunteered at VBS, and even built a business out of your God-given gifts. But somehow…you’re still wondering what your real purpose is.

Not the “be a good mom” purpose. Not the “serve at church” purpose.

You want the kind of purpose that lets you breathe deeply and say, “Yes. This is what I was created for.”

So… what does the Bible say about finding your purpose in life?

Let’s talk about it—messy middle and all.

First, You’re Not the Only One Wondering

Our NACWE community is full of brilliant, faith-filled Christian women entrepreneurs just like you—entrepreneurs who are building businesses while still trying to figure out how to make dinner without burning the garlic bread.

They love God. They want to serve. They want to make money (without feeling weird about it). And yet, they wonder:

“What if I’m missing it? What if I’m doing business…but not my calling?”

If that’s you, I’ve got good news: You are not lost. And you are not behind.

The Bible has plenty to say about your purpose—and it’s a lot less complicated than Instagram makes it look.

Your Purpose Isn’t Hiding from You

Sometimes we treat purpose like it’s a puzzle God left behind on a sticky note that got swept behind the refrigerator.

But the Bible doesn’t describe God as someone who hides important things from us. In fact:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” — James 1:5

So instead of imagining that finding your purpose is some kind of cosmic scavenger hunt, what if you believed that God wants you to know it?

He’s not dangling it in front of you like a carrot. He’s placed it within you.

And sometimes, discovering it begins with learning how to surrender to God—to let go of your need for certainty and trust that He’s already laid the groundwork.

You Were Created On Purpose, For a Purpose

Let’s go back to the basics:

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” — Ephesians 2:10

This verse doesn’t say you’ll discover your purpose once you hit 6 figures in revenue. It says:

  • You’re God’s handiwork.
  • You were created to do good works.
  • Those works were prepared in advance.

That means your purpose isn’t some futuristic destination. It’s woven into how you were made and what God’s already planned for you.

You don’t have to chase it. You just have to recognize it.

Purpose Isn’t Just One Thing

Spoiler alert: Nowhere in Scripture does it say, “Thou shalt find thy one true calling and stick to it forever.”

David was a shepherd, warrior, king, and poet.

Paul was a church planter and a tentmaker.

Jesus was a carpenter before He was a preacher.

Purpose evolves. Seasons shift. Roles change.

So if you’re in a business-building season, that doesn’t mean you’ve missed your calling as a mother, minister, or mentor. Your purpose may stretch across multiple callings—and they all count.

Your business? It’s not just a side hustle. It can be part of your Kingdom work—an expression of faith and business working together.

Purpose Isn’t About Platform—It’s About People

We live in a world that makes “purpose” feel like it has to be big, visible, and Insta-worthy.

But Jesus didn’t tell Peter, “Go build your brand.”

He said, “Feed my sheep” (John 21:17).

Sometimes your purpose looks like coaching clients. Other times, it’s being available when your friend texts you at 10:47pm saying, “Can you pray for me?”

Either way, you’re living on purpose when you’re faithful to what’s right in front of you.

Purpose + Business = Not a Sin

Let’s clear this up.

Making money isn’t unholy.

Wanting a profitable business isn’t selfish.

You are not more spiritual if your business stays small and under the radar.

The Proverbs 31 woman ran a household, bought fields, managed servants, and sold goods. And the Bible calls her wise and worthy of praise.

So, if you’ve been shrinking back, thinking, “I can’t possibly build this business and honor God,”—pause that thought.

You’re not just allowed to step into your purpose through business.

You’re invited.

When You Still Feel Like You Don’t Know

Let me guess: You’re nodding along and still thinking, “That’s great, but I still don’t know what MY purpose is.”

That’s okay.

Sometimes purpose doesn’t show up as a lightning bolt. Sometimes it looks more like:

  • The conversation that stirs something in your spirit
  • The project that makes you lose track of time
  • The client who says, “That changed my life”

Start there.

Purpose is often revealed in the doing, not just the praying.

And sometimes, it’s revealed in the middle of the ordinary. Right when you least expect it, God shows up and offers you peace in chaos—and suddenly, your next step becomes clear.

Here’s Your Next Step:

If this blog stirred something in you — that whisper that maybe you’re called to more — don’t ignore it.

At NACWE, we help Christian women entrepreneurs build businesses that honor God, grow income, and nurture real friendships.

Fan Into Flame The Gift Of God

February 23, 2021/in Entrepreneur Ministry, Entrepreneurship/by Valerie Riese

Fan Into Flame The Gift Of God

In 1 Timothy 1:6, Paul writes to “fan into flame the gift of God.” Find out what this means for women in ministry.

Fan into flame the gift of god

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
1 Timothy 1:6-7 ESV

First Timothy 1:7—the teddy bear of all Scripture. So much peace in one promise. In today’s webinar, we learn we can feel peace even in the day-to-day disorganization of ministry, all thanks to the promise of 1 Timothy 1:7.

As I panned out to study the context of our lovely journal-cover verse, I discovered more encouragement for women using their gifts in ministry just one verse back, “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God.”

Continue with me for the story of my Rhema word for 2021. I’ll show you what it means to fan our gifts into flame and get ready for His divine appointment.

1 timothy 1:6-7

An Invitation to Fan Into Flame the Gift of God

In November, the Candidly Christian contributors were amid conversation in our private Facebook group when Laura Marshall wrote, “Valerie, May the road rise up to meet you… That was from the Holy Spirit to you. I had no idea what it meant or where it was from until I just looked it up!”

“May the road rise up to meet you” is the first line of a traditional Irish blessing I’ve held dear since I was a girl, part of a precious heritage from my grandmother. Laura knew none of this, so of course the Holy Spirit used her to snag my attention.

Laura also didn’t know that as the new year approached, I’d been thinking and praying about my future as a writer and dreams of freelancing. I hadn’t heard the familiar Irish blessing in ages, so Laura’s special-delivery message yanked my thoughts to a screeching about-face.

And I replied, “guess I better get moving then.”

And move I did. The blessing became my compass as the Lord directed my first steps toward 2021. With my fan in hand, Jesus breathed into my writer’s flame.

I began at the beginning—grammar and punctuation. I asked questions, read primers, and took courses. When the opportunity came a few months later, I was ready.

Reflection Question

When was the last time you received a Rhema word? Was it directly from God, or did He use someone or something else? Thank Him for His divine messengers, and ask Him to help you be sensitive to His next Rhema word.

Your Turn to Fan Into Flame the Gift of God

My friends, the road can’t rise up to meet you unless you’re already walking. You can walk this ministry road because God gave you a spirit of power, love, and self-control, but you must develop and maintain your gifts for the journey.

What does the mean for you, dear ministry sister? I don’t know, you’ll have to take that to the Lord, your CEE (Chief Executive of Everything). Invite Him in. Ask Him to show you what’s ahead. Then keep your eyes and ears open, and your fan close by, so you’re ready when your Rhema word comes.

In the meantime, I leave you with this:

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

What road is rising up to meet you? Ask Jesus to point you towards your first steps.

How the Christian Enneagram Can Help Your Ministry

February 16, 2021/in Entrepreneur Ministry, Firm Foundations/by Valerie Riese

How the Christian Enneagram Can Help Your Ministry

The Christian enneagram exposes our worst version of ourselves, and prescribes our sinful nature to the healing message of the Gospel. Find out how the Christian enneagram can help you as a woman in ministry.

How the Christian Enneagram can help Your ministry

As an undergrad in psychology, I was fascinated with personality tests as a tool to uncover the motivation of human behavior. However, I lost interest in my junior year because every assessment only broadcast my deepest insecurities and fears, leaving me feeling broken and exposed.

Until now.

What is the Christian Enneagram?

During our February 16, NACWE C&E Webinar, Kim Eddy talked about the Christian enneagram. Did you catch that important distinction? Kim didn’t talk about the enneagram; she talked about the Christian enneagram.

What’s the difference between the enneagram and the Christian enneagram?

Jesus.

Beth and Jeff McCord have spent their lives studying the enneagram at the foot of the Cross. Their mission at Your Enneagram Coach is “for people to see themselves with astonishing clarity so they can break free from self-condemnation, fear, and shame by knowing and experiencing the unconditional love, forgiveness, and freedom in Christ.”

So what does this mean to you as you pour over your Christian enneagram results?

Hope.

The Christian Enneagram and The Gospel

The Christian enneagram exposes our fears, our weaknesses, and our worst version of ourselves, but it it doesn’t stop there. It then prescribes our sinful nature to the healing message of the Gospel.

Type 1 fears being judged as bad or unredeemable, but you can trust that Jesus loves you no matter how much you mess up.
Types 2s fear being rejected, but you can find rest knowing you are loved and chosen.
Type 3s value their productivity and fear being exposed as incompetent, but Jesus loves you by His grace, not your grind.
Type 4s fear being insignificant, but God so loves you that He sent is only Son to save you.
Type 5s tend to hoard their resources for fear they will run out, but Jesus meets all your needs.
As a type 6, I am prone to anxiety, but I can cast my cares on Jesus in prayer.
Type 7s can be hard to satisfy, but Jesus will take care of all your needs.
Type 8s long to protect themselves and those they love, so you can rest knowing that Jesus will never abandon or betray you.
Type 9s long to know they matter, so you can be assured that God made you for a very specific purpose.

Reflection Question

Do you know which enneagram type you are? You can take the assessment free at YourEnneagramCoach.com.

2 Corinthians 12:9

How the Christian Enneagram Can Help Your Ministry

And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
2 Corinthians 12:9

The Christian enneagram is a tool that can help us serve God better. Women in ministry share the same fears and weaknesses as everyone else, even though we are dedicated by God to our calling. So how can we stand sanctified in the ministry spotlight?

Being set apart for ministry is more than just a job title. Sanctification means being cleansed, purified, and renewed in order to be equipped for service.

The Christian enneagram points us to Jesus. When we surrender our fears and weaknesses to Jesus, we can then lean on Him and invite Him to serve with us.

Sister, the truth is that no matter what enneagram type you are, your fears are justified and real. We will never be perfect. We will be rejected. And we will know lack.

But the Christian enneagram reminds us that His grace is sufficient for all our ministry needs, because, as Beth McCord wrote: we have to know not only who we are, but also whose we are in order to experience true growth and freedom.

Maintain Your BELIEFS: How to Repair the Stained, Scratched, and Dented Areas of Your Business

February 13, 2021/in Entrepreneurship/by Valerie Riese

Maintain Your BELIEFs

You need to plan toward consistent maintenance for your beliefs and business and ministry so the stained, scratched and dented areas don’t escalate to unmanageable levels!

Maintain your beliefs

We’ve been living in the same house since 2001. We’ve worked hard to fix exterior storm damage along the way, and still afford a family vacation most years. Now our daughter is 17, and we have many wonderful memories together.

A few years ago, my husband and I noticed we also had stained carpeting, scratched walls, and dented linoleum. We’d kept up with necessary repairs to keep our house standing, but the interior had suffered.

And so it is with our businesses and our lives.

What Does The Bible Say About Time Management?

February 9, 2021/in Entrepreneurship/by Valerie Riese

What Does The Bible Say About Time Management?

Running a business takes a lot of planning. We’re doing God’s work, so we must align our plans with His. Find out 3 ways to manage your time and a free PDF printable with 8 Bible Verses About Time Management.

What does the bible say about time management

Time management.

Do those two piercing words give you brain-freeze, too? I re-wrote this post 4 5 times. If that doesn’t tell you how much I know about time management, I don’t know what will.  Time management requires planning, and my mental crystal ball was made of thin glass to begin with, but now it’s just plain shattered.

However, today’s webinar is very helpful, because NACWE member Diane Kephart presents 3 proven methods to help you plan your business operations and manage your time: the 12-Week Year, The One Thing, and Eat That Frog.

Whether you’re trying to get through the next 5 minutes, or if you have a 5-year goal broken down by week, Diane has something you can implement today.

All of our plans must align with Scripture, so I’m happy to show you that Diane’s practical suggestions are also Biblical.

Time Management With The 12-Week Year

Luke 14:28 ESV

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it (Luke 14:28 ESV)?

By planning your year in 12-week increments, you’re forced to consider where you want your business to go and what it will cost to get there. It also cuts complacency and creates a sense of urgency to get more done.

red heart

Reflection Question

What are 3 goals you have for your ministry in the next 12 weeks?

Time Management By Choosing Your One Thing

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens
(Ecclesiastes 3:1 ESV).

Your lists will always be bottomless, so you have to decide what is most important. There is a time for everything under the Heaven, so we must also discern when the time isn’t now.

Consider the cost of your next decision to weed out what can wait. To put this into practice, Diane recommends a concept from “The One Thing” by Gary Keller.

As you plan, and throughout every day, ask yourself “what one thing can I do right now that by doing it will make everything else easier or unnecessary.”

Gary Keller’s book illustrates that if you live by this principle, your to-do list will fall like dominoes. Just don’t forget to consult God’s perfect timing.

red heart

Reflection Question

What one thing can you do right now that by doing it will make everything else easier or unnecessary.

Time Management By Doing The Worst First

For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
(Hebrews 12:11)

If you knew you had to eat a frog every day, would you spend your entire day distracted and suffocated by dread, or would you get it done right away so you could move on to a more pleasant and productive day?

The concept behind the book “Eat The Frog” by Brian Tracy is to do the worst things first, so you can stop procrastinating and get more of the important things done.

Which “frog” will you eat first thing tomorrow morning?

Bonus Tips, My 2 Cents

No matter what time management methods you use, I hope you’ll be guided by the next two verses.

Time Management With Your CEE (Chief Executive of Everything)

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
(Matthew 6:33 ESV)

We’re doing God’s work, so we must align our plans with His. The only way to know what God’s plans are is to ask, so begin every planning session my inviting Him in. I’ve offered two example prayers to help you. The second prayer is what I’ve had taped to my laptop for many months.

Lord, I’m making plans, so please join me. I can’t do this without You, nor do I want to. Please show me Your will in the big plans, the little details, and everything in-between. Please dull the decibel of my own ideas so I may discern Your voice. Thank you for choosing me, and for blessing me to do Your work. Amen.

Lord, thank You for the daily gift of Your wisdom. Please help me embrace Your delight to fulfill Your plans according to Your will. Amen.

red heart

Reflection Question

Write a prayer asking God to help you with your time management and put it in your planner. (I give you copyright rights to my laptop prayer if you want it!)

Time Management With Your NACWE Sisters

Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.
(Proverbs 15:22 ESV)

Running a business takes a lot of forethought, but please know that you are never alone. While God is your CEE, He works both in us and through us. NACWE is about building community and education for Christian Women Entrepreneurs.
