A Little Bit of Sin In Ministry

We’re not perfect, so neither are our ministries. But what can happen when a little bit of sin in ministry is allowed to spread?

Your boasting about this is terrible. Don’t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old “yeast” by removing this wicked person from among you. 
1 Corinthians 5:6-7 NIrV

The Corinthians were bragging about a man who had taken his stepmother as his own wife. Paul told them exactly what what would happen if this sinful behavior continued: it would ruin the whole church. 

When I read this story, I thought to myself “Really…? That actually needed to be said? Did Paul also have to teach them that setting the church on fire would burn it down?” 

But then I felt the sting of conviction as I paused my Bible reading for the next Facebook alert, and God whispers “Incest isn’t the only sin that can spread through a ministry.”

We all have sin that taints our ministries, and mine is distraction. A Google search for Scriptures quickly turns into a book search on Amazon. The fruit of a Facebook post asking for help is four “bang head here” memes. 

The enemy tells me that a quick break will help me think better. A few moments away won’t ruin my entire ministry. But in reality, co-mingling Candy Crush with writing yields consequences both in what I did and what I didn’t do. 

First, my calling is to write, so caving in to distractions is an act of disobedience. And whether it’s video games or incest, all sin is equal in God’s eyes. 

Second, I can’t deny that mixing a brief diversion in with my ministry keeps me from God’s best. The slippery slope from research to scrolling slows me down. I’d get more done, feel less overwhelmed, and reach more people if followed I Paul’s advice and removed distraction from ministry.

What sin keeps you from seeing more of God’s best? It’s okay, God’s not surprised by your faults. Repent, as often as necessary, and ask for His strength and guidance to remove the yeast from your ministry. 

Father, thank you for calling me to do Your work. It’s an honor and a privilege. I’m a sinner, so I know there’s yeast in this precious ministry you’ve gifted me. I want Your best, so I need it to run it with You. Please show me where my sin or neglect is every day. Help me discern your voice and soften my heart to your chastisement. In your name I pray Amen.
