My Five Year Learning Curve
Some people would have told you I was crazy, 5 years ago, birthing a baby and a business at the same time. Looking back, I probably was. Many days I feel like I still am a bit crazy for balancing or juggling the things that I do in life. So much has changed since the first days of business, luckily for the better.
As my babies have grown out of bottles and diapers my business has grown as well. It is a bit bittersweet to see both my children and my business grow before me at much the same rapid rate. Of course we’ve all experienced some “growing pains” along the way as well.
Here are a few things that happen when you’re birthing babies and a business simultaneously:
You lose a lot of sleep. If you’re going to attempt this crazy task, I suggest you get used to operating on little to no sleep. Between brilliant business ideas and crying babies keeping you awake there is just not much time for shut eye.
Your house suffers. When you’re juggling business and babies the dishes tend to pile up, the laundry goes unfolded and you get used to toys on the floor. Remember you can do many things half way or you can do a few things well. That’s my excuse anyway.
You learn flexibility. You may think you’re flexible already, willing to change paths at a moments notice, but you will learn true flexibility if and when you attempt to birth babies and a business at the same time. Only a business mom of a newborn will type one handed while feeding a baby just to meet the deadline of her newest client.
You learn to be creative. Whether it means entertaining your baby with your feet while you work on your website, or bartering with colleagues to get the work you need done in your business on a tiny budget. When you’re a new mom and a new business owner you will find your creative bone.
Looking back on the last five years of business it is hard to believe I no longer have babies on my lap while trying to type, and that I can actually afford some of the tools and services I longed to have for my business from day one. It is also hard to believe my baby girl is five years old and my business is too.
