How to Be Grateful in Hard Times (Even When You Feel Like Screaming Into a Pillow)

December 3, 2025/in Christian Woman Entrepreneur, Devotions/by NACWE Admin

There’s a moment—usually around 3:27 p.m.—when your brain whispers, “Hey… maybe we could just move to a cabin in the woods and sell handmade soap.”

It happens after the client ghosted you. The toddler threw spaghetti at the dog. Your best friend hasn’t texted back in 11 days. And your husband, sweet as he is, just said, “You look tired,” which (in case anyone is taking notes) is never, ever the right thing to say.

And there, smack in the middle of your mess… You’re told: “You just need to be more grateful.”

Cue the eye roll.

But what if—hear me out—gratitude isn’t the “slap a Bible verse on it and pretend it’s fine” answer?

What if gratitude is your secret weapon—not for ignoring the hard stuff—but for getting through it?

Let’s talk about what it really means to be grateful in hard times… even when life feels like it’s falling apart faster than your internet during a Zoom call.

1. Gratitude Isn’t About Denial (It’s About Definition)

If you’ve ever been told to “look on the bright side” while your heart was quietly breaking, you know how hollow that feels.

As Christian women entrepreneurs, we’re not called to slap fake smiles over real pain. We’re called to define what’s true.

And here’s the truth: yes, this is hard. Yes, you’re tired. Yes, it feels like everyone else is growing their business while you’re stuck rewriting your bio for the 17th time.

But also: you woke up today with breath in your lungs. You have a calling. You are still in the game.

That’s gratitude. Not pretending things aren’t hard. But also not pretending God isn’t good.

2. Gratitude Shifts Your Focus (But Not in the Way You Think)

You know how when you’re car shopping, suddenly every single car on the road is that exact model? It’s called the Reticular Activating System in your brain. (Science moment! Look at us go.)

Gratitude works the same way. When you start noticing what you do have—even if it’s small—it trains your brain to keep looking. You’re not faking it. You’re training it.

Gratitude rewires your focus. Not to ignore the problems—but to give your brain a fighting chance to see hope.

Even in the middle of your to-do list that looks like it was written by three different people with no regard for time, space, or your need for a nap.

If you’re serious about learning how to be more grateful, one of the most powerful things you can do is begin creating space for rest—mentally, physically, and spiritually. It’s hard to notice blessings when you’re moving at the speed of burnout.

3. You Can Be Grateful and Want More

This one’s for the woman who feels guilty that she’s not more thankful “because other people have it worse.” Let’s clear that up.

You can love your life and still want to grow. You can be content and still crave change. You can be grateful for your business and still want to make actual money from it.

Gratitude doesn’t mean settling. It means saying, “God, I see what You’ve done—and I trust You for what’s next.”

Sometimes the next step in growth is learning how to surrender to God when the way forward feels unclear.

That’s not greed. That’s growth.

4. How to Practice Gratitude When You Don’t Feel Grateful

Ah yes, the million-dollar question. When your kid is crying, your launch flopped, and your laundry pile could qualify for a zip code… how do you be grateful?

Here’s a short list of practical, doable ways that actually work:

✎ Keep a “Gratitude List” — With a Twist

But don’t just list “family, health, coffee.” Get weirdly specific. Like:

  • The way the light hits your desk at 10 a.m.
  • The client who actually paid on time
  • That one friend who texts “praying for you” without asking questions

🙏 Start Your Prayers With “Thank You”

Before you ask God to fix the mess (He’s listening, don’t worry)… start by thanking Him for one thing. Even if it’s just: “Thank You that You haven’t left me in this.”

🤝 Say It Out Loud

Tell a friend. Post it online. Say it to your kids. There’s power in speaking gratitude. It multiplies when you share it.

5. Gratitude Is a Weapon, Not a Wish

Paul wrote letters of gratitude from prison. David sang songs of praise while on the run for his life. Jesus gave thanks before the miracle of multiplying the bread.

Gratitude isn’t what you do when things are good. It’s how you fight back when they aren’t. It’s how you push through the fog of overwhelm. It’s how you stay grounded when your business feels like it’s stuck. It’s how you cling to peace in chaos.

Gratitude doesn’t make the problems disappear. But it does remind you that God is still in the middle of them.

When Gratitude Feels Out of Reach

Some days, you won’t feel it. You’ll snap at your husband. You’ll cry into your almond milk latte. You’ll compare yourself to that woman on Instagram whose “bad day” still includes full makeup and lighting.

And on those days, let this be your practice: “God, I don’t feel thankful right now. But I’m thankful You’re still here.” Even that counts.

So What’s the Next Step?

You don’t need a 30-day challenge or a gratitude journal with gold-foil pages (unless that brings you joy). You need community. You need people who get it—the late nights, the doubts, the desire to grow something real without losing your soul in the process.

That’s why NACWE exists. We believe that faith and business don’t have to compete—they can grow together.

We’re not here to give you a cute quote and send you on your way. We’re here to walk with you through the mess and the mission.

If you’re ready to stop doing business (and life) alone—if you’re tired of feeling like you have to choose between your faith and your finances—👇 Click here to learn more about the NACWE membership and how we support Christian women entrepreneurs like you every step of the way.

Gratitude might not change your circumstances overnight. But it will change you. And that changes everything.

But it will change you.
And that changes everything.
