What Do Giants Eat?
I have an amazing view right now. It is the most beautiful view my entrepreneurial eyes have ever seen.
I have the perfect viewing spot. It’s on top of a mountain. It’s all the sweeter because of the climb.
The sun is shining with a few clouds in the crisp blue sky. I am on a soft cushion of green grass under a tree. I breathe in. Deep breath. Smell that offering from the blooms of honeysuckle and gardenias nearby.
Daisies directly in front of me frolic in the gentle breeze that keeps the perfect temperature—a far cry from the last place on my journey. The daisies don’t hold my attention for long. My eyes quickly move to the scene spread out on the horizon behind them.
Do you want to see it? Come join me. There’s room. There’s a perfect spot for you right here beside me.
(Maybe if we ask nicely, Diane will join us and bring carrots.)
Take a look. It’s your Promised Land. What do you see? Well, if you’re in the right place, you see that dream that you have been chasing from the moment it birthed as a nearly silent whisper in your soul. You have arrived.
God made you a promise the day He placed that dream within your heart: that there may be wandering in the desert, but He gave you the promised land of your dreams. You have been made ready for this dream by your journey to get here. Every time you are delivered from your enemies. Every persecution. Every day of health. Every plague. Every trial. Every time of outcast. Every relationship. Every surprise! Every disappointment. Every day of rest. Every harsh day still working in the blazing sun and heat. Every sand storm. Every thirst. Every oasis. Every famine. Every cold night. Every blanket. Every hunger pain. Every piece of manna. Every doubt. Every assurance. Every jealous hater. Every supporter. Every fallen idol. Every proven God. Every single miracle.
This is the destination of your miraculous journey. Take a moment to soak it in.
I see my promised land flowing with milk and honey. I see the giant clusters of grapes. Imagine Numbers 13 a moment:
17 Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up into the Negeb and go up into the hill country, 18 and see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many, 19 and whether the land that they dwell in is good or bad, and whether the cities that they dwell in are camps or strongholds, 20 and whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there are trees in it or not. Be of good courage and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.
21 So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near Lebo-hamath. 22 They went up into the Negeb and came to Hebron. Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 And they came to the Valley of Eshcol and cut down from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them; they also brought some pomegranates and figs. 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster that the people of Israel cut down from there.
Report of the Spies
25 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26 And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large.
A single cluster of grapes so large it takes a pole and two men just to carry it! Those are some mighty big grapes.
I’m not sure what I am supposed to do with such large grapes. Make wine? Who’s with me for some good ol’ fashioned grape crushing?
Do you get tired at the thought of the harvest? You might need to put a team together for that harvest!
When you see the grapes, do you see an amazing fruit rich in nutrients? Nourishment bursting forth with quenching sweetness unlike anything you have ever tasted? Something to savor?
Or do you see….
Food for giants?
Now, wait a minute! This is supposed to be the Promised Land. I was doing so well painting this beautiful picture—an adventure in the senses—and then I had to go and ruin it! I just had to mention the giants! Yep!
See, look over there—there’s a rustle in the tree line well inside the borders of my Promised Land. Sigh. Well, at least the view was nice. Thanks for the carrots, Diane! I’m headed back to Egypt!
(I may be a prolific writer who requires two posts to finish this thought. However, I am NOT a quitter! Quitters don’t get chocolate! You can read part two of this post on my blog.)
