Getting Organized in Ministry

The Bible tells us to do all things in an organized fashion, but this can be especially challenging in ministry. Fortunately, our God is a god of order, so His word also tells us how to be organized, along with many examples.

Our God is a God of order. We see His order immediately when we open His word. The Bible begins with the phrase “In the beginning,” which implies there was also a middle and an end, a step-by-step method. God acts as organizational consultant throughout Scripture as He teaches Noah (Gen 5:14-22), Moses (Exo 25-31; 35-40), Joshua (Jos 1), and many others how to carry out their ministries in an orderly fashion.

Read God’s instructions to some of His servants, such as the scriptures referenced above. Ask God to show you what these scriptures mean for your ministry today. I’d love to hear what He tells you in the comments.

The Struggle To Get Organized

As His child, I know I should do the same, but no matter how hard I try, I just can’t get organized. I may steal a few tips from organizational experts who are glad to share their secrets, but finding a sustainable system seems impossible.

So instead of building my ministry, I’m constantly reinventing my own wheel. I make thoughtful, detailed plans. I make simple, scaled-down plans. But then I forget what I did, or I get confused, and I go back to the drawing board again. 

I know I’m not alone. Running ministry has a lot of moving parts, and it can be a struggle for anyone to keep it all organized. So as a child of God made in His image, how can any of us get organized?

Partner With God To Get Organized

I found an answer in the Book of Habakkuk

I will take my stand at my watchpost
   and station myself on the tower,
and look out to see what he will say to me,
   and what I will answer concerning my complaint.
And the Lord answered me:
  “Write the vision;
    make it plain on tablets,
    so he may run who reads it.”
  Habakkuk 2:1-2 ESV

Ministry involves walking towards the unknown, but even blind faith must be preceded by prayer. When Habakkuk didn’t know what to do, first he stopped, he asked God, and he waited.

God told him to write it all down. I’ve seen this verse before, but this time, the details about how and why Habakkuk should write jumped off the page.

How should he write? Plainly.

Why should he write? So that anyone who read it can run with it.

I realized that right now, the one who needs to just run with it is me.

Getting Organized in Your Ministry

This week, I stopped writing this blog post to instead write down standard operating procedures for my ministry. I’ll rely on my new OneNote notebook labeled “The Wheel” as a reminder to quit reinventing my own system every few weeks, to instead move forward.

In the end, “organized” means something different for everyone, so I invite you to sit down, and ask the God of order for the blueprints to your ministry wheels, so you can just run with it.
