About Cheryl Karpen
With little capital but a dream, Cheryl opened a store she had imagined in her head for a decade, called it Something Different and grew it the only way she knew how–one heart, one hug at a time. Dedicated to celebrating women, richly painted European hutches and armoires overflowed with jewelry, books, art and decorative accessories with messages that affirmed women as brilliant and beautiful. Something Different wasn’t just a store, it was a ministry: a place to laugh, cry and to get a hug, prayer or simply a word of encouragement. Spirited promotions were frequent and soon became can’t miss, talk-of-the-town events.
A second store soon followed. Named the most “Romantic Store in the Twin Cities” by the Star Tribune, Pure Bliss was dedicated to Nothing You Need Everything You Want For A Romantic Getaway. Filled with luxury bedding, candles, love tokens, candles, books on communication and personal care products, Pure Bliss was a darling of the local and regional media.
After more than thirteen years as a retailer, Cheryl sold both retail establishments in 2005 to focus on touching millions of hearts with words of love, hope, and encouragement. Today, Gently Spoken, a self-publishing company is best known for the Eat Your Peas Collection—a series of 21 gift books that begin with a promise to be there for a loved one throughout life’s hilarities and heartaches (www.gentlyspoken.com). Having sold nearly a million books to independent retailers throughout the nation, Cheryl relentlessly shares her message of encouragement and positivity through her books, products, and speaking platform (www.cherylkarpen.com).
Married to Mark Dougall, the conveyor guy, she has two bonus children, Tim and Katie. Cheryl divides her time between the Florida Keys and Oak Grove, MN. A kayak enthusiast, biker, hiker, reader, and traveler, she loves creating serene environments, both indoors and out.
