Chorus of Critics…Who Are You Listening To?
As entrepreneurs we go against the norm. We step outside the box of traditional 9-5 paycheck jobs. We are driven by an inner force that often makes little sense. We make choices that others don’t understand. It is important to guard yourself against the negative words and attitudes of others. If all you hear is how the economy is bad, it’s a terrible time to start a business, and “Did you hear another business went bankrupt?” how will you have enough encouragement to stick out the success process long term?
I call these well meaning folks the chorus of critics which is made up of family, friends, fellow entrepreneurs, and strangers. Now these people may have good intentions but that doesn’t mean you have to or even should listen to them. Unless they have achieved success in business they are not truly qualified to give you advice.
So who should you listen to? Positive, encouraging, motivating information and music will help guard you against the negativity. I have a daily practice of personal development to keep my purpose clear and my motivation high. I also have a business coach and mentor who has achieved great success over the past 2 decades through running a business based on core principles I agree with (integrity and serving others). This mentorship is crucial when you are doing things you’ve never done before. You will receive criticism or outright attacks from others. Many businesses have been crushed by an unkind email or comment. I encourage every business owner to seek sound council – you wouldn’t go before a judge with a lawyer, don’t stand before the chorus of critics without a strong business coach and mentor.
Over the past 10+ years I have learned being an entrepreneur is as much about the personal journey as it is about the professional journey. The road blocks that keep business owners from moving forward are often invisible. These roadblocks are part of the success journey and meant to be broken through.
