Brave
Being brave has been a theme of mine this year, and, boy, has it been on my mind this week. We are in Florida doing the theme park thing with our two youngest daughters one more time. We all have the sense this might be the last trip here for a while, so we want to be sure to do and see all of our favorites.
My youngest daughter has had a fear of roller coasters. I totally get it. I’ve been afraid of them all my life, so our plan was that she and I would hang out while Dad and big sister rode them. No worries, right?
Well, the first time we split up, I sensed this wasn’t working well for my daughter. She kept talking about all the reasons it was okay not to ride. Finally, I looked at her and said, “What’s really going on here?” I had the sense she was feeling like she was going to regret this missed opportunity. I was right. As tears streamed down her face, she said she didn’t want to always wonder if she would have loved it. So, wonderful Mom that I am, we linked arms and headed for the Dueling Dragons.
You know, it was pretty fun.
This experience has mirrored my life in my business this year. It all started with my decision to attend the Catching Fire conference this February. I remember at the end of the first morning session, Diane played “Brave” by Sara Bareilles. As I stood listening to the words and looking around the room, tears streamed down my face. I knew it was time to be brave. I knew I wanted it more than anything else for myself. I was tired of being scared. I was tired of playing small. It was time to take a leap of faith, and I did. It has been a wild roller coaster ride ever since. Lots of ups and downs, but no regrets.
So, are you ready? Is it time to get in line? A wild ride awaits with a little bravery.
