Are You Building What Lasts?
Guest post by Linda Young
Last summer, Ray and I went to Italy and saw the remains of life lived centuries ago. It left a lasting impression on us.
Pompeii was a thriving city in the Roman Empire in 70 BC. Like a thief in the night, Mt. Vesuvius began to stir and rumble while the people of Pompeii went about their daily tasks. Suddenly on a clear afternoon in 79 AD, the bubbling volcano spit forth everything it contained on an unaware city. Within two hours, life as it once was became preserved under 18 feet of molten rock.
On display were the remains of everything made with precious metals. Anything made with wood or straw was burned. We saw 1 Corinthians 3:13 (TEV) before our eyes, “And the quality of each person’s work will be seen when the Day of Christ exposes it. For on that Day fire will reveal everyone’s work; the fire will test it and show its real quality.”
The earthly possessions in Pompeii were burned instantly. It made me think about life here in America. Are we spending time on things that bring eternal glory to God? Or are we doing those things that only make us feel good? What are we doing that has a lasting value?
When we see Jesus face to face, we want Him to look into our eyes and say, “Well done thou good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:21
