How to Find Your Offline Audience as a Self-Published Author

February 11, 2013/in NACWE Lifestyle Blog/by Heather Rosson

When you publish your own book, it’s easy to focus your marketing strategy on only online efforts. While it’s true that the internet is a great place to spread the word, you can’t forget about finding your offline audience. Even though the web offers you a lot of opportunities to gain new readers, offline events can be even more credible and more effective.

Step #1 – Contact local organizations

Find out what local organizations have upcoming events and offer your speaking services to them. Try to locate organizations that have members that are a good match for your audience. For instance, if your book centers on a political topic then you may want to speak at a local politician’s fundraising event. If your book is about a business topic, consider speaking at a local Chamber of Commerce meeting. Try to imagine what kind of people will be there and make sure they would be interested in your book.

Step #2 – Write out a few speech ideas related to the content of you book

Prepare a few short speeches that relate to the content inside your book to establish yourself as an expert. Consider weaving a few quotes directly from the text of your book into the speeches. You don’t have to write out an entire ten-minute long speech, just jot down an outline or two. Think about what your book really says and communicate this in your speech. Practice in front of the mirror and be prepared to deliver it in front of an audience.

Step #3 – Have copies available on site

Depending on the event that you’re speaking at, you may be able to sell copies of your book directly to the audience. If they like what you have to say, then they are very likely to purchase. This gives you book sales and allows you to stay top of mind as they take your book home and set it on their tables and desks. You will be seen as the expert on your topic, even when you’re not by their sides!

Step #4 – Expand your range

Once you’ve spoken at a few live events, you’ll be ready to expand your area. Instead of looking for local events, start looking at what’s happening throughout your state and region. Speaking at live events throughout the country is a great way to build up your credibility as an expert in your field. Think about building yourself as a brand. And always keep in mind that you need to speak at events that relate to the audience of your book.

Always remember the importance of an offline audience. Appearing at live events as a featured speaker will increase your book sales dramatically. Be ready and prepare yourself; the writing of the book is merely the first step. Put on your thinking cap, and consider the many ways offline that you can market your book. The possibilities are endless!

Love Letter to my Business

February 11, 2013/in Diane's Blog/by Heather Rosson

IMG_3360** Note:  I wrote four years ago for Valentine’s Day but I think it is relevant to be posted again.  Enjoy!

Dear Business,

I just wanted to tell you how I feel about you for Valentines Day.  I am passionate about you. I think about you all the time. You bring me joy, give me courage, help me to jump out of bed in the morning. We have been together a long time now.

Sometimes it is hard for other people to understand the love we have for each other.  It can be overwhelming, sometimes even intimidating.

People wonder how we manage…how we make it work.

Now I know we have our challenges and that I get cranky with you sometimes.  It is hard to see you struggling.  I get nervous when you are too busy and we aren’t spending enough time together.  Or when our time together isn’t quality. I know I frustrate you when I repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

But the most important thing you need to know is that I am never going to leave you.  I am devoted and committed to you.  I love you; you are a part of me.  Our relationship will change as we grow and learn.  We will age and life will change. We will weather the storms together. I promise you this.

I am committed to you!

In fact, I thank God for you every day.  I am blessed by how much He must love me to give me you as a gift. I do not take that for granted.

So on this day that is all about LOVE, I want you to hear my heart.  I love you!  You are my sweet spot, my favorite thing, my heart’s desire.

Your beloved,

Diane

Join us for the February 2013 LOVE Campaign.  We are spreading the entrepreneurial love this month!

Watch my Love Campaign video below!

NACWE was born out of my love for my sisters in Christ in May of 2010.  I am passionate about women in business and that we need to support each other.   Our logos have 2 hearts in them for a reason.  We are here to help each other along the path.  We cannot make it alone.

Our first Core Value is LOVE.   The hearts represent each of us, a woman and her colleagues, standing in front of the cross.  NACWE is built on a foundation of love.  We choose to love our sisters in Christ and support them as they grow.

John 15:12  “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.  We choose grace and forgiveness.

We are committed to sharing connections, resources, and knowledge with an entrepreneurial tribe of women leaders and visionary thinkers.

We seek to unite under a common goal of helping one another to succeed and thrive in business. We are blessed to share in a common faith in Jesus Christ and yet know that we might each choose to worship in a different way.  We seek to glorify God in all aspects of our lives as well as our businesses.

At NACWE, we think big. We have lofty but attainable goals. Together, we can change the world.  And as we creatively leverage our presence in the business world we learn to not only survive in a changing economy, but to thrive in the midst of it.

Who are the women of NACWE?

The women of NACWE are dynamic, smart, and tender hearted.  We choose to support each other as sisters in Christ, knowing that we each come from different parts of the country and attend a variety of denominations.  Many types of businesses are represented.  Women that have been in business for many years, gather with women who are just beginning to think about starting a business.  We welcome all of these women with open arms.  We have dog trainers, jewelry makers, authors, direct sales consultants and more.

OUR MISSION is to train, empower, and inspire Christian women as they build their entrepreneurial business.

We do this in three ways:  connect, create, and collaborate

We connect through the private forum, tele-classes, webinars, live events, and virtual events.

We create through the power of idea sharing, resources, and vision.

We collaborate by working with each other, creating joint ventures, sharing referrals, and walking side by side.

We cannot wait to LOVE you and your business!  Come and join us today!

My Crooked Little Kitchen

February 2, 2013/in Diane's Blog/by Heather Rosson

IMG_4574My kitchen is crooked.  The foundation slopes.  I am used to it now after almost 2 years but I had some major balance issues when I was first moving in during the summer when it was 100 degrees for a consecutive 100 days.  Not a good combo.

I am not a kitchen gal but this kitchen has been a healing place.  A place for joy and new adventures.  This crooked kitchen has yellow curtains that took me a long time to find.  It has no dishwasher.  There are not enough cabinets, nor counter space.

But you see, this crooked kitchen is where I paint.  It holds my giant sized easel that is taller than me and has rollers.  This kitchen is where I turn on my music and let the colors pour out onto the canvas and out of my heart.  There is paint everywhere and I will have a mighty clean-up job when I move out but I am OK with that.  Paint spots on the floor and the cabinet under the sink has a streak of orange.  Lots of pain spots in the sink.  And even a few spots of paint on those yellow curtains from a paint party when I had 4 friends over.

I love this crooked kitchen now.  I am getting ready to move and one of my main questions is “where will I paint?”  This kitchen has heard me cry, scream, and rant.  I pray out loud.  It was in this kitchen that I was standing on the phone when my ex-husband asked me if I wanted to reconcile…and I later said NO.  It is this kitchen that has held me as I ached in pain with a kidney stone.

My crooked kitchen has also allowed me the freedom to cook.  I am not a domestic, Martha Stewart kind of gal.  But in this kitchen I have made meals and invited friends over to share them with me.

This kitchen is crooked.  My life is crooked….or not what I thought it would be at this age.  I am 40 years old, divorced, no children, and no family near by.  I have no man in my life.  I have amazing friends.  I have a cat named Zander.  I have a career that I have carved out for myself that gives me great job and challenges me daily.  I weigh 10 lbs more than I did last year, but I weigh 40 lbs less than I did at my highest weight.  Thus is life, the ebb and the flow.  The journey through the crooked places.

So I will always cherish this goofy crooked kitchen and how it changed me, embraced me, and created me.
