The Un-Glamorous, Ridiculously Obvious Secret to Achieving Any Goal

January 31, 2013/in NACWE Lifestyle Blog/by Heather Rosson

If you’re searching for a miracle pill, the latest get-rich-quick idea or some sort of law-of-attraction mindset hoopla, you’re not going to find it here. No, what I have to share with you is not nearly as seductive. My ‘secret’ to achieving any goal isn’t expensive or exclusive. It’s not complicated or ambiguous. But…it works. And it’s been effective in every realm of life, for people all ages, since the beginning of time.

The un-glamorous, ridiculously obvious secret to achieving any goal is that you actually have to Do The Work. Yes, that’s it. Just Do The Work.

No matter what your goal is, you have to Do The Work. Chances are you already know WHAT you have to do…it’s the doing of it that causes the problem.

If you want to lose weight, you have to show up at the gym.

When you aim to write a book, you have to sit down and write words on the page…every day.

A goal of saving money requires that you make difficult choices in small and large matters – over and over again.

If you’re looking for spiritual growth, you need to invest in your relationship with God and spend more time with His Word.

To become more organized, you have to take the time to create your system and choose every day to honor that system.

If you’re entering a season of simplifying, you must practice the art of saying no…frequently and unapologetically.

These are not things you can delegate. You have to Do The Work all by yourself. And you can’t skip a day, a week, a month or a year…you have to keep Doing The Work until you reach your goal – and often well beyond.

Sure, we moan and groan about going to the gym…we find excuses for not writing…we justify expenses we can’t afford…but that’s because we aren’t willing to Do The Work. Fortunately, Doing The Work is not as difficult as we make it out to be. Here are some tips to help set yourself up for success:

Six Steps to Help You Do The Work and Achieve Your Goals

1. Write it down. Not just the goal – but write down how you will feel when you accomplish it. Write down the things that will change in your life. If you don’t like writing, then draw, paint or create a vision board. Just keep the reminder someplace where you will see it every day so it will motivate you to Do The Work.

2. Create a habit. Experts say it takes 21 days to develop a habit. So commit to Doing The Work for 21 days. It’s not so overwhelming to think about making a change for three weeks. You can handle that, right? The good news is that after you’ve done it for three weeks, you’ve created a habit and it will be easier to maintain. Maybe that’s the whole premise of the 21-day fast I’ve been avoiding…

3. Tell someone. Tell everyone. Don’t keep it a secret. Allow yourself to be motivated by the knowledge that someone is watching you. Waiting for you to succeed. Wondering if you are willing to Do The Work.

4. Get support. Find someone who has been there before (or is currently trying to achieve the same goal) and agree to hold each other accountable. My sister and I have been complaining about the overstuffed closets and abandoned toys that clutter our homes. So we agreed to embark on Operation Clutter Free in which we’ll set goals and check in with each other every two weeks to stay on track. We may even have a friendly competition to further ensure our success! Together, we’re more likely to Do The Work.

5. Celebrate along the way. Every fitness or weight loss coach will tell you that it’s important to recognize milestones on the journey to wellness. The same holds true for any goal. Give yourself a pat on the back, a new pair of shoes, a trip to Starbucks, a bubble bath or whatever else you deem to be an appropriate reward for reaching key milestones toward your goal. I don’t know about you, but I’d be willing to Do The Work in exchange for sushi and a movie with my hubby!

6. Be an inspiration. When you achieve a goal or learn a lesson, it’s only natural that you will inspire others to do the same. Be open to that opportunity and willing to bring others along with you on the journey. You may find it easier to Do The Work when you realize that it encourages others.

What have I forgotten? Do you have any other secret tips for Doing The Work that’s necessary to achieve your goals? Share them with us here!

5 Mindset Shifts to Get Unstuck

January 28, 2013/in Diane's Blog/by Heather Rosson

attitudeThe entire month of January, we are training on the power of your mindset at the National Association of Christian Women Entrepreneurs.  We are blogging about it, discussing it on the CAFÉ call, learning about it from our experts, and taking stock of ourselves with our template for the month on self-sabotage.

I have shared about the 8 mindset mess-ups and the 3 mindset miracles and 3 ingredients in the Inspired Women Succeed recipe over the past three weeks.  Go here to read those and get caught up.

During this past month, I have experienced a massive shift in my mindset also.  It includes my decision to move from Wichita Falls to Dallas, an awareness of my money issues that were holding me back and letting go of people that were no longer healthy for me.  All of this is about mindset.  It is about setting boundaries. It is about choices.  It is about being willing to be uncomfortable in order to get to the bigger vision.

Let me share 5 shifts in mindset that you might need to make too.

Mindset Shift #1:  From waiting to ACTION.

Often we wait. We watch to see what others will do.  We research all of our options and then keep looking for more. We want to make sure the decision is right.  But the shift you need to make is into intentional action.  Being an entrepreneur involves action taking and that is often risky.  We are in a “risky business” so to speak.  And if you aren’t willing to take determined and purposeful actions, then you might just want to go look for a J.O.B.

Mindset Shift #2:  From hiding to SUCCESS

Lots of “hide and seek” going on from what I see in my clients and the members of NACWE.  We have to shift from hiding out and step out to the stage and grab the microphone.  Women are guilty of not sharing successes and then wondering why no one knows about them.  Stop hiding behind others.  For many years in my entrepreneurial career, I felt like I had to be “under” someone or endorsed by a mentor.   Well that was a mindset that I created.  I stepped out on my own by creating the National Association of Christian Women Entrepreneurs in May of 2010 and have not looked back.

Mindset Shift #3:  From scarcity to ABUNDANCE

We have to move away from the thought that there is NOT ENOUGH.   This keeps us feeling small and like we must hunt and peck to get our tiny portion.  God is gifted in providing the harvest, and multiplying our resources.  My theme for 2013 is LIVE ABUNDANT and it is about seeing how BIG the world is and watching for the opportunities right in front of me.   I want you to do the same.  There is plenty.  Step into the place that God has created for you.

Mindset Shift #4:  From wishy washy To DECISIVE

Let your Yes be Yes and your No be NO.   As the CEO of your company, you must make quick and smart decisions.  If you don’t know, then find out.  Or choose to hold off on that decision for 2 days, or 2 weeks.  Just choose.  Be mindful.  Stop living in the land of VAGUE.  Get out and stand tall and loud about who you are.  Be confident.  Yes you will make mistakes with some of your choices.  But we must keep moving.  The more mistakes I make, the closer I get to the success I seek.

Mindset Shift #5:  From fear To TRUST

As a business woman, we have to let go of a lot of fear.  Just to get started as an entrepreneur, means telling people about your idea or venture and risking what they might think.  Each step forward is about trust.  Luckily we have a Father God who is walking with us and holding our hands.  He tells us over and over again “Do Not Fear!”  or  as it says in John 14:1, “Do not let your heart be troubled”. I unabashedly believe that God has given each of us a business and that it is a GIFT.  It is not something to be taken lightly.  It is our divine duty to use our gift and trust the Gift-Giver.

My prayer for you as we finish this series is that you have been able to let go of thoughts that are NOT healthy and move forward into the SUCCESS that God has called you to.

Here at NACWE, we love providing the “people” support you need in our thriving community at NACWE.  As a former mental health counselor, I intimately know that mindset changes are the key factor in your success in business.

The 3 Ingredients in the Inspired Women Succeed Recipe for ChristianWomen Entrepreneurs

January 21, 2013/in Diane's Blog/by Heather Rosson

IMG_2866The entire month of January, we are training on the power of your mindset at the National Association of Christian Women Entrepreneurs.  We are blogging about it, discussing it on the CAFÉ call, learning about it from our experts, and taking stock of ourselves with our template for the month on self-sabotage.

I have shared about the 8 mindset mess-ups and the 3 mindset miracles over the past two weeks.  Go here to read those and get caught up: http://nacwe.org/blog/

So now that we accept this is an issue we all struggle with, I would love to share what I have found to be my recipe for getting out of the “negative Nelly” thinking.  I call it my “Inspired Women Succeed” Recipe and it has 3 non-negotiable ingredients.

Ingredient #1 is Passion

You are in business for yourself and I sure hope you have a passion for what you are doing.  If you have lost your passion, that may be due to being overwhelmed or overworked.  But I imagine you started with a HUGE passion for what you are doing.

Women entrepreneurs are a passionate group.  Without passion for your business, you never would have started.  Without passion, and vision, the people will perish, and so will the business.  Passion is LOVE in action.  Entrepreneurs take action and engage in risky behavior in order to get their message across.  Being an entrepreneur is really like standing up for your cause in public and shouting to the world what you believe in.

Action Step:   Write down your WHY on an index card and place it right in front of your computer.  What are you passionate about and WHY are you doing this?

Ingredient #2 is Persistence

Women entrepreneurs are persistent in spite of all obstacles.  We keep going, taking the joys with the bumps and lumps.  We show up every day for work, no matter what.  We are consistent and full of faith that we will figure out the right combination of programs, products, services to create success.

We are persistent women…..never giving up!  I am a marathon runner.  I have finished 4 marathons (26.2 miles).  I understand now that being an entrepreneur is a similar trek.  We have to pace ourselves and find a rhythm.  There are hills and valleys that no one but you and your inner circle will ever see. There are band aids and blisters.  There are fuel stations and water stops that are crucial to your success.  You might hit “the wall” and not know how you will survive.  There are people ahead of you, behind you, and next to you.  Keep going in your business. Keep taking one more step in each mile.

Action Step:  Figure out your 3 MUST-DO’s each day and make those happen each day.  Is it 5 connection phone calls, one hour of writing, and reaching out to three potential speaking events? Write down your 3 things and get them done each day.

Ingredient #3 is People

The 3rd ingredient is the people in your life. We need the support of key people in our life in order to succeed.  Vital roles are played by the family of an entrepreneur.  If you are married, the support of your spouse is critical.  If you are single, key friends are crucial for ongoing support and encouragement.  The right mix of coaches, mentors, and visionary consultants can make or break you.   I know that the people I surround myself with can and do lift me higher, keep me focused, and help me to see myself BIGGER than I feel on some days.

We all need a coach to hold the space for us as we move to the next level in our business.  Do not try to go it alone. Be willing to invest in the support to surround yourself with a team of colleagues and mentors to reach your God given dreams and goals.

Action Step:  Write down your list of support people so you know who to reach out to.   Decide if you need to add a coach to the mix.  Set up a consultation.  Make a decision.  If you want to discuss coaching with me, fill out this form:  www.nacwe.org/getstarted

We love providing the “people” support you need in our thriving community at NACWE.  As a former mental health counselor, I intimately know that mindset changes are the key factor in your success in business.    Stay tuned for more information on this topic as we journey through this month as I share about 5 mindset shifts that will keep you moving each day.
