Inspired Moments

March 30, 2012/in NACWE Lifestyle Blog/by Heather Rosson

Ever notice great ideas arrive at the most inopportune times – while in the shower, while out for a walk or in the checkout line

We receive these nuggets of inspiration at the most inopportune times. Without pen or paper audio recording device or video app, our brilliance leaves our fleeting mind as quickly as it arrived

Many of us women business owners are so busy caring for our families while working our business, being everywhere and doing everything that we don’t make time for inspired moments. It is hard to know when that moment will hit. It’s not as if you can mark it on your calendar, right?

What if you could help yourself along to have more of those moments on a more consistent basis when you need them? Inspired moments come by giving yourself the mental space to think, to contemplate a variety of solutions to a business problem. If you are so busy on your own version of the hamster wheel how can you make time for inspired thought?

I understand how hard it is to schedule time to think, strategize and brainstorm in your business especially if you are having some success – you are busy! I am in the same boat as a single mom of 2 and owner of a busy coaching practice.

Here are some ways I make time to think and allow for inspired moments…
– Folding laundry is a task I do not find engaging so I use that time to let my mind work. It’s great, my hands and my mind are engaged!
– Driving is when I do some of my best thinking. I don’t mean the city driving that takes all my focus but highway driving that allows for some mental space. Once in a while, I will pack up the toddlers and go for a drive to do errands a few towns over. It is the perfect combo of thought and task completion.
– Turn off the TV. I don’t usually watch television and it adds several hours to each day for me. Where TV is a hobby most people have, entrepreneurship is my hobby. So some nights, after the kids head to bed, I will spend some time just thinking, writing and mapping out different ideas. Not all of them are worth taking action on but some are and I get to enjoy the creative process.
– Go to dinner with a fellow business owner without any specific agenda. As a business owner you probably know other business owners you would like to get to know better. Grab a coffee or a meal together and do some collaborative brainstorming. It could be just what you need to get out of a business rut and make space for some inspired moments.
– Work with a business coach to get those creative juices flowing. One of my most popular offerings is the Strategy Session because my clients get the benefit of my creative ability to create out of the box solutions to their business problems. If you struggle with being creative or making the time, working with a coach might be the best solution.

Courage To Follow Your Dreams

March 29, 2012/in NACWE Lifestyle Blog/by Heather Rosson

Heart-centered people like you and me want to make a difference in the world by doing what we are called to do. It’s not “about the shoes”. It’s about using our gifts, shining our brilliance and impacting our world. We are here to help people because they matter to us.

Yet I have seen so many women truly long for more fulfillment and richness out of life but don’t know how to make it happen. They even have a secret dream but rarely admit that dream to themselves, let alone share it with others. Here are some actual reasons I’ve heard from my clients and other women I’ve talked to, about why they afraid to let their heart speak and give voice to their dreams.

• People will steal their dream and start their own business
• Don’t know how to articulate what they really want
• Afraid people will shoot their dreams down with “what makes you think you could…?”
• Afraid people will laugh at them
• Afraid of what people will say or think
• Believe it will never happen anyway (head)
• Don’t believe in themselves enough to achieve it (heart)
• Don’t know who they can TRUST to share their dream with, even if they wanted to

As my eyes run over that list of actual statements, it saddens me how much power and influence people hold over others. It doesn’t have to be that way. The truth is we GIVE people power over us, consciously or unconsciously. Yes, it takes courage to chart you own path, but imagine the lasting void you will feel in your heart if you don’t. It’s just not worth it, but YOU are worth pursuing your dream.

I guess that’s why people who follow their dreams, silence the “naysayers”, and defy the odds are the ones how STAND OUT. They had the courage and boldness to listen to their heart and carve their own path. They are my personal heroes!

If you hold a dream in your heart, don’t let others derail you. Chances are they’ve never followed their own dreams. You owe it to yourself, and to the people you are called by God to serve, to do what God has pre-designed you to do.

I would much rather have you live the life you were meant to live and experience soul-filled abundance, than to listen to the voices of those who think they know what’s best for you. God gave you a divine “life assignment”. Boldly discover it and then do what He’s called you to do! You dream matters and it matters to God.

Finish What You Start!

March 23, 2012/in NACWE Lifestyle Blog/by Heather Rosson

As entrepreneurs, we often bite off more than we can chew. We have big dreams, goals, and visions. Our excitement is contagious and we often share our ideas before we’ve fully brewed the plan to make them a reality. Be it inexperience or hopeful thinking that lets us believe we can accomplish huge projects in short time, we do so over and over.

Part of what I love about working with women entrepreneurs is strategizing. I LOVE formulating step by step plans that incorporate the multiple layers of a successful end result. While a plan is a key element to achieving your goals and make your dreams a reality there is another crucial element that often is overlooked. Let me share a little story …

One evening a while back, I enjoyed watching my 6-year-old while she was building an elevated train track for her little brother. She wanted to have the living room “all set up for him to destroy when he woke up in the morning”. Because they tracks were elevated, they collapsed many times during the construction. Each time, she would calmly look at where she was in the building process, assess the situation and determine the best way to restart her project.

At some point, I asked if she wanted to stop to which she quickly answered “no, it’s not built yet”. She was firm in her resolve to finish the project she had mapped out for herself despite the repeated disappointments of collapse and re-build.

As I watched, I thought of how if adults could have the same resolve to complete tasks or achieve goals despite disappointing setbacks, we would achieve much more. So here is what I learned from my daughter about accomplishing large projects.

Plan a project with a specific end goal (it helps if the goal benefits others)

Know your WHY so you can quickly refer back to it when things get tough

Realize that sometimes we need to try, try again to achieve our goals – something worth achieving may not come without a little work.

Understand that each “failure” is actually an important learning opportunity in what will work and what did not. Do more of what works and less of what doesn’t.

Two steps forward, one step back still gives you one step forward and a learning opportunity.

I encourage you to take these steps to the table the next time you are hashing out a vision, strategizing your goals or making your dream a reality. Need some help creating your action plan or sticking through the tough spots? I’m just an email away at [email protected] and I would love to support your dreams and goals!

Are You a Pretender or a Contender?

March 20, 2012/in Diane's Blog/by Heather Rosson

One of my favorite reality shows to watch every season is Dancing with the Stars. Despite the fact that reality TV can be very addictive and often times not a healthy way to spend a lot of time, I find myself fascinated with the entire process of DWTS. I’ll admit, some of the other reality TV shows I’ve been known to watch are considered “mindless” and contribute nothing to my personal or professional development. Yet I suppose sometimes we simply just have to have our guilty pleasures. However, on DWTS, I’m constantly in awe watching celebrities go out of their comfort zones. They work diligently each and every week to memorize and perfect routines, try to learn and look graceful, and readily accept feedback on how to improve from the panel of professionals after exposing themselves in a new way. I find inspiration on many levels to be found on the show.

The panel of professional judges as you well may already know if you too are a fan, consists of Carrie Ann, Len, and Bruno. The judge I find most entertaining is Len. Len has a series of one-liners that tend to make a point and gain attention quickly. One that stuck in my mind from a previous season was when he was challenging a celebrity who was a bit on the cocky side, he asked: “Are you a pretender or a contender?” He continued to question the dancer inquiring whether they were the real deal and open to the process, or if they were just going through the motions half –heartedly as it may have appeared. I don’t recall the reaction of the celebrity however, the question was one that got me thinking for sure.

So what are you? Are you choosing to be a pretender or a contender? Are you just going through the motions, doing what you’ve always done, not asking questions, being stale, rigid, defensive? Are you stuck in the same role as a “pretender”? Or are you diving in, giving your life and business your all with an open mind and heart, admitting what you don’t know, seeking answers and information with the genuine desire to be a true “contender” within your industry? Which one you choose makes the difference in your business day in and day out.

Chorus of Critics…Who Are You Listening To?

March 16, 2012/in NACWE Lifestyle Blog/by Heather Rosson

As entrepreneurs we go against the norm. We step outside the box of traditional 9-5 paycheck jobs. We are driven by an inner force that often makes little sense. We make choices that others don’t understand. It is important to guard yourself against the negative words and attitudes of others. If all you hear is how the economy is bad, it’s a terrible time to start a business, and “Did you hear another business went bankrupt?” how will you have enough encouragement to stick out the success process long term?
I call these well meaning folks the chorus of critics which is made up of family, friends, fellow entrepreneurs, and strangers. Now these people may have good intentions but that doesn’t mean you have to or even should listen to them. Unless they have achieved success in business they are not truly qualified to give you advice.

So who should you listen to? Positive, encouraging, motivating information and music will help guard you against the negativity. I have a daily practice of personal development to keep my purpose clear and my motivation high. I also have a business coach and mentor who has achieved great success over the past 2 decades through running a business based on core principles I agree with (integrity and serving others). This mentorship is crucial when you are doing things you’ve never done before. You will receive criticism or outright attacks from others. Many businesses have been crushed by an unkind email or comment. I encourage every business owner to seek sound council – you wouldn’t go before a judge with a lawyer, don’t stand before the chorus of critics without a strong business coach and mentor.

Over the past 10+ years I have learned being an entrepreneur is as much about the personal journey as it is about the professional journey. The road blocks that keep business owners from moving forward are often invisible. These roadblocks are part of the success journey and meant to be broken through.

Do you have road blocks in your business success? Are you ready to break through what’s keeping you from moving forward? Contact me at [email protected] to get started today!!!
