Resistance in Your Business

February 29, 2012/in NACWE Lifestyle Blog/by Heather Rosson

Guest post by Beth Jones

My mouth is dry as the Sahara desert, and I feel perspiration beads dripping from my armpits, down my side, leaving half-ring, dark stains on my new blouse that everyone can see when I lift my hands or arms even a little (oh, WHY, did I buy a light-colored blouse for this event?!). The mere handful of women who actually showed up are staring curiously at me, waiting for something profound or funny or at least a little interesting to come out of my mouth since they paid to come here.

As I open my lips to speak, the words come tumbling out, not the anointed, inspired word of God that I’d hoped for, but strained, nervous words, as if I am too eager to please these women, words of inadequacy and fear, words without God’s power, or perhaps worst of all, God forbid – words that bore. I use my notes too much and I speak too fast. My two jokes fall flat. They don’t get them. I give a weak smile, and rush on, hoping for an earthquake or something to deliver me from this torture that feels as if it will last forever.

For the next 40 minutes, I am like a car engine starting and stalling, that finally gives one last heavy shake, and dies. I fakely smile to hide the pain that is threatening to cause me to have a complete, hysterical meltdown in front of these strangers. I say goodbyes and thanks, and as the last woman leaves for the night, I begin cleaning the room.

I pack my books that are on the back table (none sold, but one woman looked at one), and then I begin sobbing uncontrollably. I have made $50 for my new local networking meet-and-greet, out of which $45 covered the food and drinks. I have made enough money to buy myself a large Sonic coke or a Starbucks coffee.

I am humiliated. My career is over forever.

This scenario didn’t happen – except in my head. It’s the one which plays once in awhile before speaking events to trip me up and shake my confidence. It’s the image that keeps me stuck at times and from taking bold, new steps to go to the next level where God desires me to be. It’s the reason for my resistance.

Resistance is defined as opposing, retarding, denying, or rejecting. During psychoanalysis, there are many signs that the client and therapist are making progress and working toward identifying the root of the problem. One sign of PROGRESS is resistance, which is a disruptive response by the client to a sensitive topic. The reason it is sensitive is because it is the source or close to the source of the anxiety.

I.e., you’re getting a little too close to what hurts or scares you the most, and you are going to head it off at the pass. Things like charging for your products and events, or raising your prices. Hosting a webinar or a live event. Doing a JV telesummit with well-known experts. Doing videos and uploading them to YouTube. Joining Pinterest. Sending in an article to an editor.

As women entrepreneurs, we struggle with resistance, too. Our unhealed emotional pain/traumas of the past and our fears (both real and imagined) are what cause us to resist moving forward and to have the success we desire.

Think of what you may be resisting in your business. Usually there are fears/anxieties underlying our resistance, such as:

    • Fear of failure
    • Fear of success
    • Fear of the unknown
    • Fear of inadequacy
    • Fear we’ll look silly or dumb
    • Fear of embarrassment
    • Fear of not being “good enough”
    • Fear that so many people will sign up for our new program, that we’ll be overwhelmed and won’t be able to manage it
    • Fear of rejection
    • ____________________ (You name your fear.)

It’s important to give a nod to the resistance, to name it, to acknowledge it is there and not deny it. It’s also important to ask WHY it’s there, as long as you don’t wallow in the why, keep staring at it and doing nothing about it (other than allowing it to control your life!).

We can pretend the resistance isn’t there by doing inane things like obsessively organizing or cleaning our desk, closet, drawer; writing another long to-do list; shopping; eating too much; talking on the phone, texting; checking email; spending hours on Facebook; walking the dog; watching t.v.; taking another online class and always learning, never applying, etc. You know, doing anything except what will catapult you into real success.

It’s time to look at the resistance and conquer it, because it’s holding you back, dear friend. It’s your time, because you’ve been hiding way too long and God is wanting to use you to display His glory.

After you realize the resistance is there, then you can move past it by releasing it to God and asking for His help, and taking small steps of faith and action. You might need friends to pray with you and to encourage you to take that first step or even that giant leap. As you begin taking more steps of faith, the resistance will melt and you will gain more confidence in Christ and will move more fully into your Divine destiny.

Keep in mind one of the reasons for your resistance is that as a believer in Christ, you have an enemy, Satan, who is resisting you and your great purpose. He doesn’t want you to succeed and to be everything God has created you to be.

Give your resistance to God…and let Him help you overcome it by His Spirit today.

“So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts.” – Zechariah 4:6, NKJV

Refresh Your Entrepreneurial Soul With Creativity

February 28, 2012/in NACWE Lifestyle Blog/by Heather Rosson

Guest Post by Cheryl Cope

If you are like the average entrepreneur, then you most likely have gotten into the habit of relying heavily upon your left brain to run your business and live your life. (An exception would be if your business is artsy or creative, of course.) So many of the day-to-day details needed to run a business are processed on the left side of our brains, like details, numbers, calculations, writing, habits, routines, and words! Chances are that you’re becoming bored if you aren’t proactive in designing creativity into your life.

Let’s break up that boredom, refresh your soul and get creative! The very nature of creativity is newness. Scientists have discovered that all things new are processed on the right side of the brain. Creativity experts claim you can become more creative by exercising your creative brain muscle, the right side of your brain.

One way to exercise your brain’s right side is to do new things. Try new ways of doing things. Try driving different routes to routine places. Be creative in everyday activities.

You don’t have to draw and paint to be creative (although art is uniquely helpful for this). Try new cooking recipes, planting new plants in your garden, doing a different kind of word or number puzzle.

Redecorate your house, read a new genre of book, or try a new arts and crafts technique. Brainstorm new ideas for your next marketing campaign. As you can see, creativity and exercising your right brain muscle is much more than about “art.”

Art builds up that creative muscle. The reason why is that words are processed on the left side of the brain. Symbols, pictures and colors are processed on the brain’s right side. The fastest and most direct way to refresh that creative muscle in your head is to make abstract art without any purpose, turning off the inner critic in your head (which would be your left brain talking).

So get out those crayons, markers, pencils or craft paints and just have fun! Don’t have any agenda or purpose in mind. Any rules that you put on yourself will hinder the refreshing effect of this exercise.

3 Ways Webinars Can Help Your Business Thrive

February 27, 2012/in NACWE Lifestyle Blog/by Heather Rosson

Recently NACWE had its first official webinar for its members, 10 Apps That Can Help You Run Your Business, with L.O. Nelson.

I used the webinar program ClickWebinar for this event, and it went great!

ClickWebinar is just one of many available online webinar services you can use to help you achieve a successful online business. ClickWebinar offers audio and video conferencing, a chat feature, and a webinar recording to use as a freebie, a product, or a give-away. ClickWebinar even offers a trial version.

Other popular webinar programs include GoToWebinar (100 to 1000 attendees, audio conferencing, invite others instantly, 30 day free trial), Instant Teleseminar (unlimited events, 100 to 3000 attendees, 21 day $1 trial), Christian Women Affiliate ($10 per month, unlimited webinars in your own branded webinar room), and AnyMeeting (free, up to 200 participants, uses screen sharing). There are many others.

Why should you use webinars for your business?

  • Webinars are fun, educational, and build trust. People love to have fun, they want to learn something new, and they want to get to know, like and trust you. Trust is essential for your business growth and success. As your clients and customers hear your voice and see your face in your webinar, ask questions, and chat with you, they will develop a relationship with you and begin to trust you, which is vital for a thriving business. It’s a much quicker way to build trust than through your ezine, blog, or sales letters. Trust, in turn, increases conversions.
  • Webinars are an excellent way to establish your credibility as an expert. Webinars give you the perfect opportunity to share your expertise with your tribe, using a video of your smiling face and a visually-appealing, fast-paced power point with valuable content. (Avoid the “death by power point” scenario, where you put your audience to sleep with lots of text on slides, few images, and/or reading your 30 slides.) This is your opportunity to SHINE and stand out from others! Webinars allow you to share your important message with the people who desperately need it!
  • Webinars allow you to get to know your tribe more. Many webinar programs feature a “chat” room and “polls,” where you can interact with and ask your audience questions. You will get to know your tribe more deeply and can even form life-long friendships. Their answers describing what they need and want also give you the perfect material to create your next blog post, newsletter, video, event, services, and product – which is exactly what they have asked for in your webinar! It’s brilliant strategy!

These are just a few of the benefits of hosting webinars. Webinars have a “techy” learning curve, but I know you can do it! Research the various services online, find the one that you like best, do a few practice sessions with friends or peers, then get started today! And be sure to send me your webinar invite!

Fresh Oil

February 27, 2012/in NACWE Lifestyle Blog/by Heather Rosson

Guest Post by Joyce Harrell

Some weeks turn out being different than anything you’ve ever known. This is true of the week I just experienced. There has been much reflection and self-examination. Our church was called to a time of prayer and fasting. The church was open every night for people to come and pray. Some prayed into the early morning hours.

One night during the prayer and fasting, God brought to my remembrance a song by Cathy Walker that I had not heard in a while. The title is Fresh Oil. It is a simple chorus, but the words moved me deeply last Monday night, as the small crowd gathered, held hands, and prayed. These are the words:

“Fresh oil, fresh anointing; oil of refreshing has come.
Fresh oil, from the green room; oil of Your presence flows here.
You make me lie down in green pastures with the One my soul adores,
Your right hand does embrace me, and from Your head green oil does flow.”

This song carries a powerful anointing. My heart sought to be in His presence this week -to be in the presence of the Most Holy, the room He has prepared for intimate prayer and fellowship. Ah, to commune with Him.

James 4:8 tells us, “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

I ask God to allow that fresh oil to flow from Him, over every inch of me and to make that way plain in every path He would have me walk. When you are walking in your own might, it’s easy to overlook the best path. Sometimes that path is overgrown with a cloud of self-doubt, or maybe it’s a small, often overlooked path. Sometimes the most obvious path is not the one to take.

My husband and I are facing many decisions right now. It would be easy to move forward in one direction or even in several directions. We have many doors in front of us right now. Onlookers may think they see the best doors for us to open.

One thing I am certain of, this week of intense prayer and fasting has shown me what I need most is the fresh oil from the Lord Himself. All these other things will fall into place – my business, my job, my ministry, my husband’s ministry.

“Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” – Matthew 6:33

Make Yourself Available

February 24, 2012/in Diane's Blog/by Heather Rosson

“When are you available?” was my question to you. I really didn’t think it was too difficult. But you had your handy dandy planner in your purse and whipped it out to check your plans.

“I miss you, and I hope you have time for me,” is what I was thinking as you roamed around looking for an open slot.

My dear friend, make yourself available again to me and to others. Don’t try to cram too many things into your day and into your life.

I need you…you need you. We need you!
