February 28, 2011/in NACWE Lifestyle Blog/by Heather Rosson

Have you ever found yourself at a crossroads, wondering, “What’s next?”

That’s where I was in 2009, as a mid-life woman who had devoted her life to her family and community. Like so many  women, when my husband and I became “empty nesters” I still wanted to be productive, but also wanted to do  something fulfilling and fun—I had too many “good years” left in me and I was eager to reinvent myself for something  better.

I had been an accountant, a bank marketing manager, a wedding coordinator, a women’s ministry leader and even a school board president through the years.  But how would those roles look on a resume’ as I competed against younger candidates who had sharper skills and memories?

My journey began as I stepped out of my comfort zone and attended networking events, hoping to meet someone who would hire me. Instead, the women entrepreneurs I met and their own stories of success and reinvention energized me.  Writing simple blog posts about mid-life helped me “get out of neutral,” and I soon ventured into an area where I had no experience–on February 1, 2010, my website FlourishOver50.com was launched. It has been an amazing ride ever since, with winding roads and plenty of rough spots, but exhilarating as I have sped through scenery that I would never have imagined myself seeing.

In just one year, I have connected with women all over the world. The website has been viewed by girlfriends in 56 countries, and I have partnered with several nationally recognized authors who are sharing their expert advice. I have a monthly segment on our local Fox 7 “Good Day Austin” morning show when I share tips for living abundantly after 50. I even have a YouTube Channel, and videos featured on Diva Toolbox TV and Oprah’s OWN website. Others tell me that my success has been remarkable. I just say, “It’s a God thing!”

But every road trip is subject to detour, and can be perilous when we aren’t paying attention. I was so narrowly focused on the destination ahead that I failed to acknowledge my own transformation, and had forgotten to take rest stops. By the end of 2010, I was worn out and scattered with many new ideas in my head, but needing a clear map for my plan. It was time to spend some time envisioning where I wanted to be down the road—did I want to be known as a website developer or as someone else? Would my message to “dream big and step out on faith” be adequately communicated through my current platform, or did I need to explore some side roads?

For the first time during this adventure, I took a break and spent many hours of quiet time seeking where God wanted me to go, not where I thought I should be headed. I created a Life Purpose Statement, with three top priorities and a clear set of goals that would stretch me in ways I had never been stretched. These became my “Powerful Me” book.

At two self-renewal retreats, I was given the guidance and solitude to really listen for the direction I needed. I shut down my logical self, and allowed my creative mind to flow, totally receptive to God’s leading. It became crystal clear—I was to become an inspirational speaker and life coach, leading women down the same road that I had just been on, getting out of neutral to design their own journeys for abundant living. My own road trip would be the foundation for workshops, teleseminars and personal coaching, with “Powerful Me” as a major focus. The website would just be one of the ways I would inspire women. Everything fell in to place, with a clear plan in my head and a renewed passion in my heart.

Is this my final destination? I doubt it. But I am looking forward to continuing the trip with great anticipation, side roads and all. With God as my Navigator, the journey is sure to be incredible!

My advice to a new entrepreneur:

  1. Don’t neglect self-care. Even if you have to schedule it on your calendar, plan time for rest and renewal. A refreshed body will give you sustained energy, a clear mind will give you focus, and an intimate relationship with God will give you direction.
  2. Develop your own Life Purpose Statement, with clear priorities and goals that will be the GPS for everything you do. Re-evaluate quarterly to see if the side roads have taken you toward new destinations. I can help you with this if you’re “stuck in neutral!”
  3. Always let God be your Navigator. When you try to set your course without His guidance, you will likely go down roads that are dead-ends.

Ask Diane: Do You Ever Get Discouraged?

February 23, 2011/in Diane's Blog/by Heather Rosson

Q:

I love being my own boss. But I must admit, sometimes the discouragement overwhelms me. How do you press through these times?

A:

Thank you for your transparency. And I totally understand; many women battle discouragement. Here’s the thing: the beliefs we have about ourselves will seep into our business. So, it’s important to check your mindset. Make sure that patterns of thinking aren’t secretly sabotaging your best efforts.

We can know everything we need to know, take every class there is to take, and still sabotage our success. We can start to feel overwhelmed, overbooked, or overcome by deadly distractions.

Here are some lessons I’ve learned on the journey:

1. Be aware of your self-talk. Our mental conversations drive our performance.

2. Watch your prophecies. What we believe will happen to us, will. Or normally does. If you seek negative, you will find it. Seek a positive outcome.

3. You are not a fake. Watch for imposter syndrome. Sometimes we step out and call ourselves into successful ventures. We must call ourselves a speaker before someone will book us. But that very step frightens many of us.

4. Watch for these mindset mishaps:

  • The Excuse mindset – we always have an excuse
  • The Victim mindset – it is someone or something else’s fault
  • The Bad Choices mindset –we don’t make healthy choices
  • The Doormat mindset – we don’t value our talents
  • The Insecure mindset – we are afraid to promote ourselves

What holds you from success? What blocks your mind?

PUSH Through!

February 23, 2011/in Diane's Blog/by Heather Rosson

Guest Post By Sandy Myers, CPC  founder of Thrive Now Coaching.

You’ve got to PUSH through to see the results you desire in your life.

Practice. Until.  Something. Happens.

Then, repeat. To breakthrough to the next level of your success in your life, you must PUSH.

“Push through Sandy,” my supportive husband shared with me last night. I’d had a small meltdown regarding some business goals.  I attacked these goals a couple of months ago.  I repeated a series of action steps that I assumed would lead me to a different place in my business.

I grew discouraged.  I had done all the right things to succeed but wasn’t where I wanted to be. Fear tried to sabotage my success, but I had to hone my faith and applaud my effort.

As I heard the words “Push Through,” the acronym came to my mind: Practice Until Something Happens. I knew “Pray Until Something Happens.” It has well-served me with encouragement to have faith.  But the word, “Practice,” was the answer for me.

Faith without works (action) is dead. I can pray and believe, but I must keep taking action to see the reality of what I hope for. Practice means that we repeat a particular activity or skill so that we can become proficient in it.  Practice molds our excellence, and helps us to become the best version of ourselves.

The journey to success reveals the true nature of our character.  It requires us to make mindset adjustments along the way. I call these moments, “check points” along the journey.  Check Points remind us “why we do what we do” so we can gain the proper perspective to continue our venture. Anything worthwhile is going to take major introspection, time and constant effort to build, but the return is amazing.

The same is true for yearly goals and resolutions. We are motivated to make the necessary changes to get to our desired goal. We sign up for classes. We go to the gym. We enter the day with promises of a positive attitude. We try to stop smoking.  We take action and hit the ground running.  At some point we calculate the measure of our work (check point), and we may or may not be happy with the result.

Success comes with consistency. There is no other short cut to it. At some point, an opposition will arise or a distraction tries to take us off course. Instead of trying to be flawless, realize that challenges will come.

I recently learned that with every blessing, comes a new set of challenges and trials. We may succeed in our progress, but each higher level of success brings its new set of demands.  That is why we must have the positive and resilient mindset to WIN and overcome. The journey shapes you into a champion.

Every day brings an opportunity to believe in yourself and move forward with your action plan. You have to continue to “practice” your new habits, and continue to “practice” your new strategies.

Show up every day, and repeat what you accomplished the day before. Practice Until Something Happens and repeat.  Don’t give up if you are not at your ideal place. Each week will fluctuate in its results but success will come with time as you PUSH through.

Tips & Tools: Perfectionist Paralysis?

February 22, 2011/in NACWE Lifestyle Blog/by Heather Rosson

Are you paralyzed by the need to be perfect?

Perfectionism is a common barrier to your success in business.

Part of developing a successful business is to actually develop that business through the services, programs, products and events you offer to reach your market.

Perfection paralysis limits your success. Don’t get me wrong, I am a firm believer in producing quality products, events and programs but if you NEVER actually offer anything because it’s “not good enough” then how will your business grow?

Anyone can create a JOB for themselves but to develop a business that gives you the income and freedom to live your life in the style you desire is what most businesses owners want—and sadly never achieve.

And what makes the product “perfect” anyway? Who knows? (Most perfectionists surely couldn’t tell you.) The next time you are stuck in a rut by perfection paralysis, ask yourself these questions. Then push outside your comfort zone and decide it is “good enough” to move forward.

  • · Is the product of use to my target market?
  • · Will the content solve a problem that is common for my target market?
  • · Is the information written so my market will easily understand?
  • · Will the participants leave my event with great clarity on the subject?
  • · Are my events on relevant topics to my target market?
  • · Are my offerings free of major technological glitches?
  • · Is my info product/eBook etc easy to read (font style and size)?
  • · Is the presentation of my information laid out well?

If you can answer yes to these questions then you are probably ready to release your program, offer your free eBook or start promoting your event.

Notice I didn’t say “is the eBook the best eBook on the market”. It doesn’t have to be the best. It has to be clear, well written or presented, easy to follow and of value to your market.  And if you just can’t seem to pull it together on your own there are some great programs that will help.

So do yourself and your clients a favor, give yourself a break and give your awaiting public the products, programs and events they want to say YES too!

Ask Diane: How do you move so fast?

February 17, 2011/in Diane's Blog/by Heather Rosson

Q: You are constantly launching exciting new products and services. I can’t keep up—but I love it. How do you do it?

A: I have a secret. Here it is: ACT FAST NOW.

I choose to take action.  This is one of my best secrets and I offer it to you.

I have always unknowingly lived by this philosophy of taking action now.  It is in my nature to want to get started.  To make a move.  Some might call it impatience.  I call it urgency and purpose.

I do my research, make wise choices and then take action.  Seems simple enough, right?  But I have watched many of my clients and colleagues who don’t do this and I now can see the difference.  In fact, I recently talked to some colleagues that I know and love that I met 5 years ago.  After talking to a few of them, I had to shake off depressive feelings.

One after another, each of these talented women told me they were doing the exact same thing that they had been doing four years ago.  They were not moving forward, they were not taking risks.

By moving fast, I know that I will make some mistakes along the way.  I allow myself that freedom.  By taking fast action, I actually invite more mistakes.  But I am also inviting more blessings and a lot more results.  If I am going to make a mistake, I would rather make it this month than wait and talk and ponder and talk and make the same mistake in five months.

Are you willing to risk? Are you willing to act fast now?
